Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton took life as an ESL teacher by the horns throughout her first four years following her reception of a TESL degree. She had taught in Korea, Japan, China and Thailand; and having felt like she had spent enough time o the Asian continent, she decided to set her sights towards South America. And of course, if she was going to go she had decided that entering through the continent’s richest country would be a good start.
With her impressive resume, it wasn’t hard for Ramona to get a decent job in Rio de Janeiro. And within a month of finishing her contract in Thailand, she had done all the necessary paperwork and made her way to start a new life on a new continent.
She fell in love with Rio from day one. She loved the beaches, the climate, the culture and the food; and had no problem adapting to the customs associated with each. She learned to surf and spent most of her time in one of the southern suburbs right outside of the city, where a good, consistent break always waited for her and welcomed her with warm water year-round. She also learned some Portuguese and made some friends along the way that she will never forget.
